A Building Canada Fund and Federal Gas Tax Project.
The Town of Lockeport is mainly located on an island connected to the mainland by a natural causeway. “Global Warming” certainly has had an affect on the Town’s road system connecting to the mainland. Storm surges and extreme high tides were eroding the shoulder of the road to the extent that we were experiencing undermining of the road. If this situation were left unattended the Town would have lost its’ main access. The railway lines were removed by CN Rail back in the early 1980’s, therefore there is extensive use of this road by heavy equipment. The deterioration of the road was becoming more and more evident each year.
The benefits of conducting this project were:
- Continued access to and from the Island of Lockeport
- Prevention of further erosion/undermining
- Correction of unsafe conditions for vehicular/pedestrian traffic
- Prevention of contaminates entering the harbour
This involved the placement of armour stone along the shoreline to create a shoulder area where a guardrail and walkway were located for pedestrian safety. The walkway will encourage more recreational use and active lifestyle. With the removal of the CN rail, Lockeport has utilized the former railway line and trestle as a walking trail. This has proven to have provided a means for several individuals employed on the island to walk to work. We are confident that the inclusion of this safe extension to the already existing walkway will encourage more use by others which will in turn reduce fuel emissions. Up to the completion of this project this section of road was not safe for pedestrian traffic.
