April 27, 2017

The Town Council of the Town of Lockeport has been examining the condition of the trestles for some time now.  In 2013, the engineer company ABLE Inc. did a study and determined that “the bridges are adequate for pedestrian traffic; however, to maintain that status, the missing pile situation must be monitored for further deterioration, especially after any storms, surges, or ice events.”

Since this study, the Town has done some repairs and resurfacing; however, the condition has deteriorated significantly over this past winter.  The tides have been higher and we have experienced an increase in storm surges.  More recently we have discovered undermining and erosion on the ocean side of the rail bed.  Sink holes have appeared.

This presents a significant safety issue for those using this important walking trail.  We do regret the inconvenience in shutting down this walk-way but Council’s duty is to address the safety of this trail.

Two engineers will be arriving the week of May 1st to give us a preliminary assessment and advice.  Council will move on this advice and keep you informed.

The enclosed photos will give you some idea of the deterioration and erosion.

Please be patient and do not take unnecessary risks.
